Our Story

From a French village to Potrero Hill

Le Marché Cezanne was born from a simple idea: bring the warmth of a French village market to the sunny slopes of Potrero Hill.

Our founder, Mario, grew up in the tiny village of Gourgeon in France, where food came straight from nearby farms and grocery shopping was part of everyday life. Families bought what they needed for the next few meals, knew their farmers by name, and followed the rhythm of the seasons. That spirit of connection and simplicity is at the heart of everything we do at Le Marché Cezanne.

After moving to San Francisco and working at La Fromagerie, Mario fell in love with the city’s food culture and neighborhood markets. He, and his business partner from la Fromagerie, imagined a place that would feel like an épicerie, a small grocery shop where you pop in often, pick up beautiful ingredients, and chat with the people who feed your community. That vision became Le Marché Cezanne: a “farmer’s market with a roof,” bringing together local, organic products from around the Bay Area alongside special French favorites.

In 2022, after a year of planning and hands-on construction (including Mario and his father tiling the floor and creating the “Local Market” mosaic themselves), we opened our doors on 18th Street. Since then, Le Marché Cezanne has been recognized as a Provence-inspired French grocery dedicated to sustainability, freshness, and its neighbors here on the Hill.

Today, our shelves and fridges showcase seasonal produce from local farms, pantry staples and treats from Bay Area makers, and a curated selection of cheeses, charcuterie, wines, and regional specialties that bring a little taste of France to San Francisco. Guides for expats have even called us a “true little French grocery store” and a go-to spot for French cheeses, biscuits, and aperitif essentials.

More than a grocery store, Le Marché Cezanne is meant to feel like a neighborhood living room: a place to grab coffee and breakfast on your way to work, pick up lunch, gather everything you need for dinner or a cheese board, and say hello to familiar faces. Every product on our shelves is chosen with care, with the goal of supporting local producers, honoring our French roots, and nourishing the community we love.

Bienvenue à Le Marché Cezanne — we’re happy you’re here.
